Aligarh: A day after violence involving students on the campus, the administration of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in Uttar Pradesh Saturday announced the closure of the university sine die.

AMU Registrar V.K. Abdul Jaleel, while issuing the closure notice, said all students have been ordered to vacate the hostel within 48 hours.

According to a notification of assistant controller (examinations), all examinations scheduled for the day have been postponed. Their next date will be announced later.

On Friday there were three rounds of violence between armed groups of students. No one was injured.

Following the violence linked to the university's internal politics, the district authorities advised the AMU registrar and the proctor to close the university.

AMU Vice Chancellor P.K. Abdul Azis is in Kerala at present and will return on May 3. The situation will be reviewed on his return, a university official said.

In his message from Kerala, Azis assured the students that the university will be reopened shortly and all examinations will be rescheduled. He said that it will be ensured that students do not suffer any academic loss.

This is the third time that the university has been closed during the term of Azis, who is facing a probe for alleged irregularities.

Azis said that the decision of sine die closure of the university was taken to save the lives of students and maintain peace.

The university authorities have arranged transport for students told to vacate the hostel. IANS
